Why does every "read it later" app turn into a digital guilt graveyard?

by•

The pattern is always identical: I find an incredible essay, framework, or technical breakdown, save it with the best intentions, and literally never open it again. Saving the article gives your brain the cheap dopamine hit of "learning" something without doing any of the actual reading.

The core tension is friction versus retrieval:

If an app makes saving frictionless (a single clic makes it so easy!), you hoard hundreds of links and the pile becomes so intimidating you avoid opening the app entirely.

If an app forces friction up front this?"), you abandon the workflow within four days because it interrupts your browsing flow.

For those who build personal knowledge management tools or productivity software: how do you design a system that actually gets users to consume and apply what they save, rather than just building a larger graveyard?
