πŸšͺ What happens in the first 5 minutes of your product?

byβ€’

I watched a stranger use our product for the first time last week. Screen share, I just stayed quiet and watched.

It was painful πŸ˜…

She skipped the welcome screen, missed the main button, and spent almost two minutes in settings looking for something that was right on the dashboard.

Everything we thought was obvious wasn't.

Since then I've been obsessed with the first 5 minutes. Some products I love throw you straight in with no tour at all. Others walk you through every step. Some ask 6 questions before you even see the app (I usually leave those).

Which made me wonder:

Do you use product tours, or do you hate them?
Do you ask questions during signup?
Have you ever actually watched someone use your product without helping?

If you haven't, do it. It humbled me fast.

stay quiet and watch part is the hardest. We skip long tours and use one short prompt that points to the main action, plus maybe a single signup question if it actually changes what the user sees first. The rule I keep coming back to is get someone to one small win as fast as you can, then explain things. Thanks for the push to run more of these sessions

We felt that same pain at the beginning, but product tours really are essential for new users. The good news is you learn as you go, and they get a lot less cringeworthy over time lol.
