The project I finished and immediately stopped caring about
There's a thing I built, shipped, and then felt nothing about. It worked. People used it. I got the messages I'd been waiting for. And about three days after launch I realized I had no interest in maintaining it.
I kept it alive for a while out of obligation. Answered the emails, fixed the small bugs, pretended I was still invested.
Eventually I admitted to myself that I had built it to prove I could, not because I cared about the problem, and once the proof was done the motivation evaporated.
The uncomfortable lesson is that finishing something doesn't guarantee you'll want to keep it. And building the wrong thing well is still building the wrong thing, just with better documentation.
Now I ask myself one question before starting anything: if this works and nobody notices, will I still want to be doing it in six months? If the answer is no, I don't start.
Have you ever shipped something good and then discovered you didn't care about it at all?
