How do you update core workflows without breaking user trust?

by•

Our earliest adopters built impressive custom habits around our product's initial limitations, using spreadsheets and manual exports to fill the gaps.

When we finally shipped the native automation to replace those hacks ,engagement actually dropped for a week because their familiar routine were disrupted.

For teams launching core updates: how do you introduce structural product changes without alienating users who rely on the old way?

Mobile forces this on you, which turned out to be a useful discipline. People keep old app versions installed for weeks, so every backend change in my app has to keep working for the older builds too: the new way ships next to the old one, and the old one only goes once nobody is on it. Applied to habits, I would do the same thing on purpose: let the spreadsheet export keep working while the automation proves itself, and show people the new path from inside the old routine rather than removing the routine. A week of dip sounds like the routine breaking, not the feature failing.
