We built a drag-and-drop feature into our Mac's notch, and it's surprisingly useful

by•

We've been working on Dots, a macOS app that turns your Mac's notch into a customizable workspace.

One of the features we've added is drag and drop.

The idea is pretty simple. Instead of opening another app or switching windows, you can just drag files into your notch and access tools like file conversion right there.

We built Dots natively using Swift and SwiftUI because we wanted it to feel like a natural extension of macOS rather than another window sitting on your desktop.

And this is just one of the features. Dots also supports your own apps, websites, Apple Shortcuts, and developer tools, but we wanted to highlight the smaller interactions that make everyday tasks easier.

We're still in beta and continuously improving things based on feedback.

Curious what other drag-and-drop actions you'd actually find useful in your Mac's notch?

If anyone wants to try it:

A batch image resize action with a target upload size could be useful. Show the resulting dimensions and file size, keep the originals, then let me drag the smaller copies straight into the upload field.
