Stop doing cold outreach without a reason to reach out
Most people think outbound is about sending more emails and LinkedIn messages.
I think it's about finding the right people at the right time.
Here's how I'd build an outbound system:
1. Find intent sources.
Don't start with a random lead list.
Start with people who are already showing signs of a problem.
• People asking questions in LinkedIn comments
• Companies hiring for relevant roles
• People attending industry events
• Founders discussing challenges publicly
• Companies announcing funding or expansion
These signals give you a reason to start a conversation.
2. Turn those sources into lead lists.
Build repeatable systems to discover relevant prospects in bulk.
Collect the source, signal, company, decision-maker, contact details, and date. Verify the data before outreach.
3. Make volume systematic.
A monthly starting target could be:
• 1,000 relevant email contacts
• 400 targeted LinkedIn prospects
• At least 50% of prospects backed by a relevant intent signal
• Three follow-ups per contact, where appropriate
Volume gives you enough activity to learn. Intent gives your messages context.
4. Give people a reason to reply.
AI-generated personalization alone won't save a weak offer.
Understand the pain point. Create a useful lead magnet. Make a specific offer that helps solve the problem.
5. Measure what matters.
Track positive replies, qualified conversations, meetings booked, and opportunities created.
Email opens and connection acceptance can provide context, but they aren't the end goal.
My takeaway:
Don't automate random outreach.
Build a system that finds demand, identifies the right people, and starts relevant conversations at scale.
That's where AI becomes useful.
