Compact Contacts 1.4 for Mac: inline editing, contact deletion, and better Notes
Compact Contacts 1.4 is now available on the Mac App Store.
This release grew out of feedback from people using the app to clean up their address books and work with long customer notes. The main additions are:
• Direct table-cell editing for supported fields.
• Single and multiple contact deletion with preview, backup checks, and confirmation.
• A dedicated Notes editor, a roomier Notes-focused view, and persistent text-size controls.
• Improved full-text Notes search and Smart Views covering 34 fields.
• Custom layouts, better persistence for window/sidebar/column settings, and alphabetical navigation.
• Fixes to Notes preservation in recovery files, merge undo, and long-note editing.
It still works with the contacts on your Mac and processes contact data on device, without a developer-operated contact cloud or third-party analytics. Notes search is opt-in, and ordinary vCard exports exclude Notes unless you choose to include them.
Thanks to everyone who sent specific examples and feedback. If you try 1.4, I’d love to hear how the editing and Notes workflows fit your day-to-day use.

Quick follow-up: Compact Contacts 1.4.1 for Mac is now available on the App Store. This is a smaller update shaped by detailed feedback from people using 1.4.
What changed:
• Notes controls now fit in one compact row, with a reliable 100% text-size reset, better spacing, and backgrounds that adapt to light and dark mode.
• Custom Smart Views can have their own icons. Built-in views are easier to hide and can be restored in Settings.
• Optional alphabetical section headers make a name-sorted table easier to scan, independently of letter navigation.
• The window restores its saved size cleanly at launch, and switching sidebar views no longer leaves the Inspector edit button disabled.
• Clearer Search Notes labels, simpler layout names, and more consistent Inspector and Appearance controls.
• Better phone-number display for Spain, Argentina, and Uruguay. Stored numbers are unchanged.
The inline editing and previewed contact deletion introduced in 1.4 are still included. Thanks to everyone who took the time to send reproducible examples—those details made this update possible.
