For years I generated invoices by hand in Google Docs, saved each PDF to a folder on my laptop, and collated them every quarter to email to my accountant when GST or provisional tax fell due. It worked, but I wanted a more organised way to do it. On top of that I kept a spreadsheet to track how much GST I'd collected and how much income tax was accruing. The harder problem was knowing what mine was actually to spend: my operating cash, money owed to IRD, and personal savings all sat in one account, and the bank balance didn't tell me which was which.
