Why is it so hard to switch Chrome's actual browser UI in Manifest V3?
Hey everyone! 👋
I'm preparing to launch Chrome Appearance Switcher here on Product Hunt soon.
One of the most frustrating things about Chrome's Manifest V3 architecture is that browser extensions operate in a sandbox that completely prevents them from touching the actual browser window frame, tab strip, or omnibox address bar.
To solve this, I built a lightweight Native Messaging companion that dispatches `WM_SETTINGCHANGE` notifications to Windows in real time. Chrome mirrors the OS application theme and repaints the active window frame instantly — with zero browser restarts needed.
Before launch day, I’d love to hear from this community:
- How often do you switch between Light and Dark mode on your browser?
- What features would you like to see next (e.g. sunrise/sunset auto-scheduling)?
Would love your early feedback! 🚀
