When I try to assign an app, the list is blank. I deleted the app, since all it did was put an icon on the lockscreen labeled “click”.

After you tap the widget shape to add them to the frame, you must click to open the lock screen widgets shape selector, and select the content to be displayed. View the Widget Guide:
