Our ultra-fast Daily: Three takes on new products. Yesterdayโs top ten launches. Thatโs it.
Firefox's experimental new app ๐ฆ๐ฅ
Mozilla's Firefox just launched an experimental new app aimed at surfacing the best personalized #content on the Internet.
Most recommendation engines generalize their recommendations based on what's popular in your country or state. Firefox Advance actually tracks which articles you specifically read and actually finish, so it can recommend the best content for you, not the whole world.
Mozilla has already been moving towards content curation: last year, they acquired Pocket, which made it super simple to save and manage a reading list of articles on all of your devices. As part of Mozilla's new Firefox Quantum browser, Pocket also now surfaces "Trending Articles" based on their proprietary dataset in every new tab.
These recommended articles create another revenue source for the free browser: unsurprisingly, Sponsored Articles (aka ads) appeared earlier this summer. While users could turn them off anytime in the settings menu, it's likely only a small percentage will know where to look.
The team behind Firefox is openly taking on Facebook, both with this launch at replacing the FB News Feed and their Mozilla Facebook Container, which limits FB's ability to track your browsing history online.
Privacy has become a major concern for many. Would you use this? Share your thoughts in the discussion. ๐ฐ๐ค

Alexa, why are you crying?
Nobody is using Alexa to buy stuff. ๐ข
Turns out, asking a virtual assistant to buy toothpaste wasn't the "killer feature" Amazon and Google expected it to be. Only 2% of the 50 million voice assistant devices sold been used to purchase something. Oops.
But don't throw away your Echo just yet. These tiny voice assistants can do a lot more than reorder toilet paper. We've compiled a list of voice-assistant ready products for your Echo or Google Home:
๐ก "Alexa, turn on the lights." LIFX Bulbs can be controlled with just your voice, or from your smartphone anywhere. Pro tip: schedule your lights to gradually turn on in the morning to get yourself out of bed.
๐ "Alexa, start Chompers." This daily podcast from The Tooth Fairy is designed to help kids brush their teeth for the entire two minutes, from the same team behind community favorites StartUp and Reply All.
๐ "Alexa, enable Away Mode." This awkward skill plays weird noises when you're away to fend away burglars. Tracks vary from "Couple Breaks Up And Watches TV" to "Man Helps Daugher Assemble Drawer."
๐ "Alexa, enable Gordon Ramsey." Yes, Michelin-star chef Gordon Ramsey is just waiting to hang out with you while you cook. We can't promise he won't roast your cooking skills.
Want to build your own Alexa skill? Storyline can help, with 1300+ upvotes from the community, no coding required.
And if you're feeling left out, Amazon's new Echo Spot is adorable. Of course, it's on Amazon Prime. ๐ฆ

This crypto company just went public ๐ฐ
When there's a gold rush, start selling shovels. ๐ค
As cryptocurrencies exploded last year, multi-million dollar mining farms plugged in around the world to confirm transactions for Bitcoin, Ethereum, Zcash, Dogecoin, and hundreds of other token networks.
In exchange for confirming transactions, miners get paid big bucks. Every confirmed block of Bitcoin transactions pays out 12.5BTC, or ~$87k every ten minutes. Bitmain, a leading mining group, is reported to have made $3-4B... just last year. ๐ฎ
Meet the newest shovel salesman: Argo Mining, which just went public in London and raised ยฃ25M. Pick your preferred coin, choose a mining contract, and the coins will start flowing into your wallet. Over 50,000 are on Argo's waiting list for their Canadian-based rigs.
Cryptocurrency mining contracts have excited since bitcoin mining took off years ago, but it's not typical to see blockchain companies go public. We'll have to wait and see if Argo Mining can find a loyal group of miners.
Want to try mining yourself? This nifty browser extension lets you donate your processing power to charities like The Hispanic Foundation, or to help people get out of jail.
And if all of this is confusing, here's a beautiful visual demonstration of the technology behind Bitcoin, Ethereum, and more. โ๏ธ๐ฆ

This $1B company suddenly shut down ๐ฎ
Musical.ly is shutting down.
They were acquired last year by Chinese social-giant Bytedance, who owns and operates international competitor Tik Tok for a reported $1B.
Tik-tok was the #1 most downloaded app globally in the first quarter of 2018. The karaoke-esque 15 second video-sharing app was downloaded over 45,000,000 times in the first three months of 2018. That's more downloads than Snapchat, Spotify, and Gmail...combined.ย ๐ฎ
ย
All of Musical.ly's 100M users will be transitioned over to Tik Tok in an attempt to bring their entire userbase under one roof. ๐ข
We're sad to see Musical.ly go, but this wasn't a huge surprise. Bytedance killed Musical.ly's livestreaming app Live.ly in early June, despite its massive popularity among 26M+ users.
Sunrise, Mailbox, and now Musical.ly โ all of our favorite apps eventually shut down. Come pay your respects at the Startup Graveyard. โฐ๏ธ๐ฅ

Tik Tok originally launched as a lip-syncing app named Douyin, complete with Snapchat-like video effects and a a built in social network. It reminds us of when we spent all weekend playing with Mac Photo Booth effects.

Our new experimental app... now on Web ๐ฅค
TL;DR: Today, we're bringing Sip to Web. Get daily tappable tech news and stories directly on in your browser, on iOS, or Android. ๐ฐ
Earlier this year, we launched Sip: a simple app that curates the most interesting and important tech news of the day, from major product announcements to stories about your favorite makers.
The community loved it: Sip stories have been viewed over 1M times in the last three months, covering everything from an esports team raising $37M from Steph Curry to an e-commerce startup raising $240M.
ย
We launched Sip after discovering an overwhelming majority of our community use Product Hunt to stay up-to-date on what's happening in tech and follow trends in this rapidly changing industry.
Instead of scrolling through Twitter all day, use Sip on your phone or computer to quickly bring yourself up to date with everything tech. Share your hot take in the (new!) comments section with the rest of the Product Hunt community.
Check out Sip for Web and share your thoughts. Happy sipping. ๐

Game of Thrones star launched an app โ๏ธ
Today we have a special guest: Maisie Williams, who plays Arya Stark on Game of Thrones, is here to tell you about Daisie, the new app that she and her co-founder Dom Santry are launching today. ๐ป
Hello Product Hunt! It's Maisie. Dom and I had a wonderful time in San Francisco, and heard that this is the place to be on launch day!
Success in the creative industries is wholly dependent on luck and โinsโ.ย When I was 12, I auditioned for every stage school in London and didnโt get in. Had I not got Game of Thrones, that probably would have been the end of it for me, so Iโve always pictured that person who these opportunities were not around for.
At Daisie, we are building a platform for creators to showcase their original work, collaborate, and make meaningful connections. You have a profile, and you have a timeline, but the way your profile grows is by the chains that you make. To make a chain with someone, you have to work together. Itโs a two way connection that encourages discovery and collaboration.
Our ultimate goal is to give the power back to the creator. Opportunity comes by working together, and when people's work speaks for itself โ without being validated by a follower count or a casting director.
We're a team of six (come work with us!).ย We'd love to hear your feedback and suggestions, and I'll be around on Product Hunt today answering questions, ask me anythingย (except for the Game of Thrones ending).

A phone with no apps raised $1.75M ๐ฏ
Using your phone is fun. Really fun. Too much fun.
Apple's upcoming iOS 12 will come with a suite of tools to curb your smartphone addiction, but luckily, startups everywhere have beaten Apple to the market to help your addiction:
๐ค NoPhone is a nifty Android launch client that only lets you open two apps at once. It even comes with a task list to keep you focused.
โก Light Phone, which crowdfunded more than $1.75M, is an actual phone designed to be used as little as possible. No apps, no games. It only works for actual phone calls and ports directly into your pre-existing phone number.
๐ฎ Moment tracks exactly how long you've spent in-app automatically.
๐ Go F*cking Work is a Chrome extension that makes you do that.

BEST products of the year so far ๐
This past monthย was filled with hundreds of product launches, from companies big and small. Y Combinator relaunched their free online Startup School to fund startups worldwide, Stripe launched a tool to create your own debit card, and you too can Make OS X Great Again. ๐
Tools built for the Product Hunt community are all the rage:
๐ Preview Hunt lets you preview your post page before launch
๐ซ Hunted or Nah is an extension that checks if a site has been hunted
โ๏ธ We launched Makers, an online community to help you get stuff done
If you're feeling nostalgic about what technology was like a long time ago, time travel to the best of January, February, March, April, May, or June.
As for the the most upvoted product of the year, it's a close race between Robinhood's cryptocurrency trading platform, Google's slightly creepy AI that pretends to be human, and a productivity tool from a small startup. ๐

Facebook lost over $100,000,000,000 yesterday ๐ฎ
Facebook had a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day.
After a quarterly earnings report and call with Wall St analysts, their stock price dropped ~20% in after-hours trading. As of right now (7AM PT), their stock is trading at $176 (down 18% from yesterday).
Over $100B in value disappeared in an insight. Some context: that's like the entirety of General Motors, Ford and Target... combined. The drop most of Facebook's recent stock growth, returning to prices from April.
With their recent product efforts and direction, this isn't a huge surprise. Efforts to curb "viral news" will negatively affect a company whose primary revenue stream is attention. Product changes that improve user privacy (largely caused by the EU's GDPR and the post-election Cambridge Analytica scandal) will hurt Facebook's ability to charge companies big dollars to specifically target ads, and adding new employees to moderate content will hurt their bottom line.
At the same time, Facebook's doubling-down on increasing "time well spent" in the app with their newest feature: Watch Parties. Their hope: investments in features like these will increase Facebook's growth in the long-run, even if it means having some bad quarters.
You'll be able to watch videos on Facebook with your friends remotely... in other words, it's the feature that Netflix should have built years ago. ๐
Psst! If you're still dying to watch Netflix with your buddies, maker Stephan Boyer built a Chrome extension to sync up your Netflix streams remotely. ๐
