Want an AR Tamagotchi?

Niantic, the makers behind the viral 2016 augmented reality (AR) game Pokémon GO are back with another contribution to the real-world metaverse.
Peridot is a virtual pet simulation game where you hatch and raise one-of-a-kind digital pets, explore the world together through AR, and collaborate with other players to diversify the species by hatching new generations of 100% unique creatures.
AR gives the game a real-world element: Peridot is powered by Niantic’s Lightship ARDK (Augmented Reality Developer Kit), a set of tools for mapping multi-player adaptive AR experiences.
Real-time environment mapping and “obstacle occlusion” mean creatures know how to navigate the world realistically. Users can play fetch, for example, and the ball will bounce off the wall, while your “Dot” will avoid real-world obstacles as it goes to retrieve it.
Semantic segmentation helps Dots act intelligently: “For the first time, we’re using a novel AI technique called semantic segmentation to enable these creatures to understand the real world,” says maker and Director of Production at Niantic, Ziah Fogel.
“Peridots forage in the dirt for a prickly beet snack, dive into water and retrieve kelp, or rustle through foliage to bring back a blue tomato.”
“Perigenetics” provide infinite permutations: Each Dot has a set of unique “genes'' which determine its appearance — and the game’s generation algorithms use these genes to construct a limitless number of variations.
“The math behind the Perigenetics System becomes pretty staggering — delivering a scale and diversity of gameplay that we think is unique to this universe,” says Fogel.
Peridot is free to download, and its makers are welcoming constructive reviews of this groundbreaking tech.
Are you really still typing?

Full disclosure: Wispr Flow is the AI dictation tool most of us at Product Hunt (use we still have a few holdout typers, what romantics). Hold a key, talk, and clean text drops straight into whatever app you're already in — Slack, email, Notion, your IDE, wherever your cursor lives. No switching windows. No copy-paste ritual. Just say the thing – yes, you can whisper it – and even your most run-on sentences will be turned into polished writing at 4x the speed of typing.
