What tool do you use to send automated emails? Help please

To start, I'm not the developer of our app. And, I have no idea about email tools such as for automated emails that sends to a user when they signup, or sending emails to bulk or all users.
so what tool do any of use to send automated emails, such as confirming user when signing up. or sending emails to existing signed up users for an update, or promotion, etc. what's a good one that has a free (obviously limited) plan?
Does it use their email setup, and just our domain? or how does that work? or what stops it from being marked as scam?
We're opening up user signups on our app fto users using email as method.
I have my emails forwarded to my Gmail, and am able to send from Gmail using our domain- but it always ends up in spam folder. is there a fix or alternative to this?
last thing, rather than paying for a tool or service to send emails, automated o otherwise, has anyone setup their own SMTP? haven't looked into it much, but seems like a possibility- maybe even something to do on my Raspberry Pi. which still begs the question, how to avoid getting emails marked as spam?

We use Klaviyo but there are other alternatives like ConvertKit and Beehiiv (Beehiiv has a free plan).
On Klaviyo you can select the email address to send it from and to receive replies. There are checks and balances around your email reputation which have never been a problem. One thing to watch out for are sophisticated bots so make sure you have CTAs and verification steps to stop them.
i think what's happening is you're using the same domain for transactional emails / marketing emails as for your regular sending. I'd suggest splitting them so you have:
name@newsletter.yourdomain.com as the domain you use for marketing emails.
and then
name@yourdomain.com for your regular emails.
This way your regular emails are more likely to stay out of spam.
Emails go to spam for many reasons.
Click-bait subject line. No unsubscribe button if emails are for marketing purposes. Copywriting that looks like spam. Sending many emails without warming up a domain. People marking your emails as spam. etc
All of these and more can contribute to ending up in the spam folder and killing your domain's reputation. As this reputation worsens, emails are more likely to become spam.

Check out Mailerlite and use or continue using GSuite and do those extra email security steps they indicate. Don't use webmail setups because it's too rudimentary and you won't have any profile picture while sending emails and that looks unprofessional + could harm your branding.

Hi Rich, hope you've got some great insights from the thread below. I'd add to avoid the trap of simply mass-inboxing your list. Email flows are optimal and reduce the rates of unsubscribers, too. Make's the brand less annoying when they see it in the inbox :D !

but wanted to look into a way if we can do our own. i'm a not a developer, but was curious if we can host our own email server and program our own automated verification emails, along with general automated emails for updates, etc.
I usually charge to help people with this, so I will give you just a couple of hints:
- Read about the difference between transactional and bulk e-mails
- Read about SPF, DKIM and DMARC
- Read about how SpamAssassin scores spam points in a message.
