How did you get over your cold start problem?

For Knowledgehunt.co (still in that phase, tbh), the first 300 users we got were from direct marketing and listing on directories (betalist). We outreached individually to people on Twitter who we thought would be interested in becoming our user. For example, I knew that people who follow ProductHunt have higher chances of being interested in Knowledgehunt. So, I started reaching out to people who 'liked' the PH Twitter page.
