For me, as a technical guy, this is not an easy and interesting question. Large companies have a dedicated designer for this. Small projects hire outsourcing specialists, but how did you create it?

Well, it was a team effort. We only had the tool's name PitchMonster.io, and we creatively approached the creation of the logo. We announced a cash prize among all team members for the coolest idea. In the end, my colleagues spent a lot of time searching for references. It's a great way to get all your colleagues thinking :) By the way, here's our monster logo!

Keep it simple, and don't have it busy. Maybe a "lightning Bolt" in your style, Serge, is part of your name. If you like I can come up with some sketches for you.

Ideally it should be long process started from selecting Target Audience, Analyzing Competitors, Building Positioning. After that you can select colours, styles, and check how it looks like on market and how it differentiate you
But sometimes it's just 5-min idea and it's done :) I guess that works even for huge companies

Anyway, it's so cool that there are so many different creative brands and logos. And how many more will come.

Just type in your brand name, and look among the thousands of ready-made template designed for your brand. If there are elements that you're not satisfied with (e.g the color, symbol, layout, etc), you can easily customize it.

It was a challenge for me. We're an app related to stock, futures, forex, & crypto markets & traders and a lot of stock logos you'll find on google are generally the same- some type of play with 'candlesticks'. I didn't want to have another generic logo like that. But at the same time our initials are boring- T and H. There wasn't anything exciting that could be done with it. So we just kept it simple and modern.
Would actually love to see a mockup of what other could come up with. 
There are a couple of "ingredients" I like to keep in mind:
1. Does your brand name have some words that can be symbolized? Random example: "SparkIdeas" can be lightbulb, lightning bolt, an asterisk
2. Who is your business for (target market)? If it's for little kids, you might want more bubbly and colorful imagery. If it's a fintech for retirees, you might want professional and conservative imagery.
3. What values does your brand represent? Is it an open door solution? Is there some exclusivity? Are you a conservative business?
I also like inspiration, not to copy, but take me down a path. Some free tools like https://looka.com/onboarding can help.
Also don't be afraid to just doodle a bunch of things, play around with ideas, and ask others for their opinions especially if they are your target market.

When I saw our logo at Behance I immediately fall in love with it. I connected with the designer and bought it instantly. It was overwhelming to expect from my team members to like it because they didn't. I can't describe, how frustrating it was for me to watch their reactions. Together now design the one that is a better fit to our company and product.

We just redesigned an icon in the SVG editor so it looks like logo. Pretty simple, but it worked 🙈
We used Iconizer, but you can just google "icon editor", there're a lot of them, like Iconfinder, RedKetchup and many more.
@meadow_simmons Yes, it's fast and works for a quick project start. But with this approach, there is a high probability of making a good logo that only the creator will like. This is a common mistake made by techies (like me) who are bad at design. 😆
I can say most of the time was spent actually thinking around the name rather than the logo, we played around with a few designs on Canva and ended up with something quite decent :). There was a lot of thought around how the name could affect SEO but still be non-generic. Also not being too overly simplistic.
