How can you use marketing automation to increase retention?

What is I usually do for some of my project I try to setup an automation for the different stages of the customer journey and then look the the details very very very carefully. Most of the automation e-mails I receive are really discouraging me to use the services, so I like to see what the users do and modify the automation.
