Examples of "decentralized discoverability?"

While the web itself is built on a series of decentralized protocols (TCP/IP, HTTP, DNS), discoverability is still centralized on platforms like Google Search, Twitter, YouTube, etc... Even web3 stuff relies on centralized indexes/marketplaces like OpenSea. The idea of mirroring an index (Pirate Bay), or having a distributed database (DNS), is fascinating. These are the examples I can think of: DNS UseNet FidoNet PirateBay Mastadon Any others? What could "decentralized discoverability" look like for content?

The first thing that came to mind for me is web rings. For anyone under ~40: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/We... Would be cool to see a modern spin on the idea.

Also been thinking about this, since it seems everything is a discovery problem nowadays. Other areas to consider would be distributed hash tables (DHT: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/...) with further classification metadata allowing for subset searching and partial downloads. Kinda like searching for communities and forums, but once plugged in to the group you get updates to new areas and content. Another thought I had was around a form of registration. So you don’t have to replicate and copy a known set of endpoints, instead you are recommended peers similar to social recommendations. Then again you can hook into the p2p aspects using this as the gateway or entry point. I think for this to extend to content and have interest it’d need to be more lightweight than a platform and closer to a protocol. That would allow for what feels like more control over consumption and a directed interaction (more like newsletters right now).

The good old forgotten, P2P... I'm building a platform that will connect peers. You're interested in old cars, find your old cars communities and see what they are promoting...

I am still learning the concept " decentralised discoverability". Would my neighborhood chat (WhatsApp) be decentralised discoverability? Every Wed is marketday - ppl are allowed to advertise. It is decentralised and I am discovering something - )would be better if it platform were not owned by a mega company).
