Best practices I'm seeing for early product-market validation at MIT

One of the biggest questions every early-stage founder faces today is: How do I launch my startup in this new era of AI-driven product development? It s so easy to build quickly now. Do I build first or validate first?

Personally, I ve seen hundreds of startups born in the past year. I m a grad student at MIT, and I created an AI accelerator for MIT and Harvard, so a lot of those startups have had amazing founding teams. I want to share some of the best practices I m seeing for getting products into market in an era where a lot of the old best practices seem to be shifting.

How do you spend your weekends?

One of the most interesting things to me is how culture shapes our weekends.

Some people unplug completely. Others treat Saturday like Monday.

How many and what type of subscriptions do you have?

Maybe this post will help makers understand how much people are willing to spend, what products are useful to them, and what the main motive for buying is.

I personally try to keep track of how much and what I spend. Before I invest in something, I consider:

  • what will be the return on it (i.e. whether I will earn something by buying/investing in a product),

  • whether it will be profitable for me in the long term,

  • whether it will save me time.

Is building in public losing its value?

At first, it was novel. It gave us a real look into what it takes to build a clothing brand, a tech product, or a service business. It built loyalty, connection, and people appreciated the honesty.

But now it feels like everyone has to do it, like it s an obligation. Feeds are flooded with MRR screenshots and day 37 of building X, and it s harder to tell what s authentic.
Curious what it s been like for others. Have you found it worth the effort?

which industry do you think is the riskiest to start a business, and which is flourishing?

With AI, it seems to be everything possible:

Everybody is a builder, maker, marketer, founder, (vibe)coder/developer.
