Solo Android dev, focused utility apps

About

Solo Android developer building small, focused apps that solve one real problem well — no bloat, no unnecessary permissions, no accounts required unless they genuinely add value. My first release, Home Secured, came out of my own habit of driving back home to check if I'd locked the door or turned off the stove. It's a simple departure checklist that gives you a timestamped answer instead of a guess. I'm drawn to problems that are small in scope but genuinely annoying in daily life — the kind of thing everyone has a version of, but nobody's built a clean, no-friction solution for. Long-term, I want to keep building a handful of these focused utility apps rather than one large, everything-app.

Which metric do you consider to be the best preferred indicator when launching?

When PH was in its early days, upvotes were the most important. (They are still in demand now), but people increasingly want comments.

Because PH no longer counts only upvotes in the final ranking, but also other things: upvoting, commenting, sharing, etc.

What is the small job that you gave to the AI and which you never reclaimed?

There s no shortage of bold statements regarding how AI is going to replace jobs, but I find the humble victories much more fascinating the small tasks that have been taken off my plate and remain off.

My actual contenders are mundane things like translating my jumbled meeting notes into a list of action items or making a customer service response sound less frustrated than I was at the time. Boring but valuable in practical saved time.

How do you increase the price of a product without scaring away customers?

In my 4 or 5 years of working at startups, I ve noticed that people always have a problem when they are told about changes:

free version jumped to a trial with a subscription or lifetime purchase

subscription and lifetime purchase prices increased
