I've been designing and shipping software professionally for 20+ years — spanning full-stack development, solution architecture, cloud infrastructure, and mobile, for clients ranging from scrappy startups to Fortune 500 enterprises. In 2019 I started Open Sky Solutions to bring that same depth of engineering to small and mid-sized businesses who couldn't otherwise afford it. After architecting and building e-commerce systems from scratch for multiple clients, I got tired of reinventing the same wheel. So I built Open Sky Commerce — a production-ready Next.js e-commerce platform that lets developers and agencies skip the boilerplate and ship something real. It's the codebase I wish existed when I started building stores for clients.

What made you give up on hosted e-commerce platforms?

We built Open Sky Commerce because we kept running into the same problem. Clients would come to us with a decent Shopify or WooCommerce setup, and within 6-12 months they were hitting walls -monthly fees stacking up, platform limitations blocking customizations, and no real ownership of the code running their business.

So we built a self-hosted Next.js store they could actually own. One payment, no monthly platform fee, full codebase access. We deploy it, they keep it forever.

Curious what pushed others to the same conclusion, or what's kept you from making the move. If you're still on a hosted platform, what would have to change for you to consider self-hosting?
