Have you ever ran a business on donations?
As an indie app developer who bootstraps projects, sometimes I can't help but think that one day when savings are gone, I must find a way to sustain my digital business, and perhaps I should run it on donations. I'm working at Nomadful, a digital health company with a simple mission: to provide anyone holding a phone with free, high-quality mental health services. As of today, my mobile app has accompanied over a thousand people through their unique journeys with mental health.
Have you ever ran a business on donations? What have you done to support those who run on donations?
MidLife Start-Over
Hi there Hunters, Im Lisa. I am just now getting started in software and agentic coding at the big age of 51. I have NO background in tech of any sort and my current career (day job) is in a marginalized sector (that's all I am gonna say but smart ones will figure it out lol).
I started Mixxsy Labs to build software, games and (the dreaded) social style webapps. I am so excited about what I am doing-some of these ideas have been in my head for a very long time. All of this is so new to me and I love the stuff I am creating. Right now my projects are "one serious, one silly." The first is Frennz, a leads gatherer and gated content distribution tool for creators on X. The other is Znapzor, an A.I. photo game that is easy, mindless and FUN. Can you guess which of the 2 projects is the silly one and which is the serious one, lol?
I know 51 isn't "old, old" but when you are surrounded by teenagers making millions in Saas it feels like you are WAY in the "out group." The crazy thing is I couldn't have started in this at any other time in my life. The tools and timing have led to this and I am truly just happy to be here. Nice to meet you all.
And to the other builders and founders: I find myself impressed by you all over and over. Everyone is building such cool stuff. So much smarts and motivation, I love being surrounded by it. Thanks for inspiring me.
How do you handle fear from public speaking when pitching the product or giving a presentation?
A few days ago, I asked several people for a video testimonial.
Many of them:
were shy about appearing on camera
Gotta Catch 'em All-but HUMANS!
I thought to myself "what if there was a game that took the fun of a picture game like Pokemon Snap (but catching pics of PEOPLE instead of Pokemon) and combined it with the Location Tracking aspect of Pokemon Go?" And so I started making ZnapZor, which honestly is not really like either of those games but is nonetheless addictive, mindless and FUN.
The premise is you're a Zor alien now on Earth to gather data (images) of earthlings doing earth things in as many habitats as possible. You take Znapshots of people and the more interesting the actions and locations the higher the score. The images are "translated" into ZorCode and highest scoring go on the Leaderboard.
I've been working on building it and letting my friends test it and I knew I was on to something when every day tons of new pics started appearing. I was no longer having to ask them to test it-they couldn't stop playing around and taking Znaps all day. Still some work to do but releasing it SOON. wanna play?
