Is usage-based pricing becoming the norm for AI tools?

Hey everyone,

I've built my product around traditional SaaS pricing (monthly tiers), but I m starting to wonder if that model is getting outdated, especially with more AI-powered and compute-heavy tools entering the market.
That shift requires real architectural changes, instrumentation, metering, billing logic, and UI changes, not just pricing tweaks. It s something I m starting to seriously think about for my own product.

In particular, AI usage has real COGs (every prompt costs money), and I m seeing more platforms experimenting with usage-based models, or hybrids like SaaS base + usage + overage.

For those of you building AI or compute-intensive tools:

My tool reached $300 MRR! Here's how I did it (no audience, no ads)

$300 MRR is actually surprisingly hard to reach if you don't have an existing distribution built. It took me 6 (quite difficult) months to get here.

Here's how I did it:

Hi, I'm Lucia and our team is building a private AI tool

Hi Product Hunt! I m Lucia, part of the team building Geode, an on-device AI assistant that helps you record, transcribe, and summarize meetings and notes with complete privacy.

I m excited to be here and would love to connect with early adopters who value data privacy and productivity. We are a small team that moves fast!

We built a local AI meeting assistant that runs on Apple Silicon(works in Airplane Mode)

I m part of the team building Geode. We are solving a specific problem: AI convenience without the Cloud risk.

Most AI notetakers upload your audio to their servers to process it. If you discuss sensitive IP, NDAs, or medical info, "cloud encryption" often isn't enough.

How Geode is different: We leverage the Neural Engine in Apple Silicon (M1/M2/M3/M4) to run transcription, translation, and summarization entirely on-device.

🔥 Drop your tagline and I'll try to guess what your product is

A tagline is the first piece of content a user will see about your product on the leaderboard. It's so important that you get it right. You should be able to get a really solid idea of what your product is just by reading a handful of words.

In the spirit of forever optimising our taglines, I wanted to do a little experiment:
