Billy Congo

Billy Congo

I review movies and TV shows.
Pinokio
I wish it worked better. I like the idea of scripting installs, and housing apps in a common browser interface. The problem is that with the two products I tried to install it failed on the downloads, and it doesn't have something to resume. The problem with the two installs, ComfyUI and Allegro, is that they rely on huge downloads from hugginface. And that's where it breaks. I tried uninstalling and then reinstalling, and that didn't work either.

Flimo
Filmo is 404. Also, your link to Filmo says Privacy Error. Your connection is not private Attackers might be trying to steal your information from flimo.co (for example, passwords, messages, or credit cards).
Popcorn
Popcorn is 404. Popcorn is no longer there. It's gone, man.
LazyDay
Technically, it did the job that it's supposed to do. I was able to find new and interesting movies and shows to watch. It's just that the design is a bit strange. Are the previews on YouTube supposed to be working? Because they don't. After you click on a film they give you 7 semi-similar movies to choose from. You can mark a movie watched, make it a favorite, or add it to a watchlist. Which is fine. But what if you have no intentions of seeing it? They need a don't like button so I don't have to keep seeing it.
Decider
The problem with decider is its politics. It leans hard to the left. Just review the shows and movies. Stop telling us who should be cancelled. Also, 90% of what it considers trending is just stupid stuff about 'The View'.
Bookmer
It's a pretty new product, so I'd say give it some time and we'll see how it develops. It's not quite as good as booky.io, but that one's been around for a while. I definitely like the minimalist design. Unfortunately, the design of ProductHunt doesn't allow me to directly reply to your reply, so I'll add my reply to my review. Both booky and bookmarker have the bookmarklet, but booky.io has much greater flexibility in terms of where you want to file the bookmark. There's also a browser extension for it. You can easily create new categories and/or new pages. But as I said, booky.io has been around for a while, so it's had time to develop these features.

Dark Reader
Love Dark Reader, wish it worked on all websites. Strangely enough, Dark Reader doesn't work on ProductHunt. Or I should say that some of the functionality doesn't work. For instance I can't see how many stars I've rated this product right now. Luckily it has an easy toggle on/off switch. Oh, look! I've given it 5 stars! It's a big help if you're on the computer all day.
uBlock Origin
I never thought I'd need another ad blocker after Adblock. But they sold out. And then there were companies pretending to be uBlock which also didn't do the job properly. I don't understand why everyone doesn't use it. So if a friend is using nothing, then I will install it for them. If they're using AdBlock, I uninstall it, and install this. One of the best utilities out there.

Etcher
The Etcher worked flawlessly. I've tried a bunch of other software, and this is the one I'll probably end up using, because it's very simple and straightforward.
Ultimate Guitar Originals
Perhaps Ultimate Guitar Originals isn't around anymore. The site Ultimate Guitar is. I go there every day looking for stuff to play. On one hand it's pretty well organized in that it's pretty easy to find stuff. On the other hand the quality of the material varies wildly. They have stuff out there that is clearly wrong. I contribute to the website, so I am trying to make it better. It's an invaluable resource whether everything is 100% accurate or not.
BroadwayHD
Broadway HD has stuff that nobody else has. They also have a fair amount of stuff that has nothing to do with Broadway. It's also stuff that I can find on other platforms. They do have a section for stuff that is new, but they don't have a section for stuff that's going away. So if there's something you might want to watch later it might disappear without warning.
Letterboxd
Letterboxd is my backup movie and TV review site. I take my reviews from MUBI and import them into letterboxd. Letterboxd has a lot more users than MUBI, but it's not as flexible in terms of getting TV shows in there. You have to go to TMDb and create the entry there and then wait for it to populate to Letterbox.
MUBI
I use MUBI every day. Because I watch a lot of TV and Movies and I want somewhere to keep track of what I've watched. I was watching something the other day, and it seemed a bit familiar. I searched for it on MUBI, and sure enough I had already seen it. The nice thing about MUBI is that if it doesn't have the show or movie I just watched, I can add it. So that means I can also keep track of all the shorts I watch as well.
ChatGPT by OpenAI
I tried to get around the safeguards that ChatGPT put in place. It's a bit like a stern adult who doesn't want to have any fun. I see this as mostly a tool for younger people who don't have as many technical skills, or are just lazy and don't want to write papers. My brother uses it to ask technical questions, and ChatGPT gives pretty good answers. About the most fun I had was asking it to write a sarcastic movie review for a movie I just watched. So it's a good tool, but I just don't need to use it.

Zoom
Boy, you want to talk about timing? Zoom came out at just the right time, and captured a huge audience that needed a way to videoconference. I use Google Chat and Skype, depending on the technical ability of the person I'm talking to. They don't have the time limitations that Zoom has. But Zoom has to be the easiest for most people, and so a lot of the people I know ended up buying a subscription. Which is fine. If I need to use it for more than 20 minutes with someone, we just time out and dial in again. No problem.
GitHub
My brother came to me recently because he wanted to have a website where he could post information. As so many people do these days, he asked ChatGPT what he should use. It told him github. I told him that github is only for code as far as I know. I have about 20 repositories out there. And then I did some research, and sure enough, github does host static pages. But that's an important distinction. My brother created the account, and so I thought I would just put the code up there and then have a cron job run to update his pages. It doesn't quite work like that. You can use Github Actions to run things, but that's a lot more trouble than I'm interested in. So instead I just put the pages up there, and run things locally on my machine from my cron. What I do is generate the pages locally, then do git add for the pages, then git commit, and then finally git push. So he's got his website, and nobody has to spend any money.

Google Chrome
I love Google Chrome, despite the fact that it makes me nervous. It has so many great features. It can seem a bit bloated at times in terms of it's memory usage, but I spend so much of my time browsing that it's worth it to me. The reason it makes me nervous is that it has all my information. It has all my passwords, all the sites I use. It has all my information!

Serializd
Serializd uses the TMDb to populate it's database of TV shows. It allows you to rate individual episodes which is nice. You can see what other people are writing about the shows you watch, and follow your friends recommendations. The main problem with the site is the technical help. I noticed that there were episodes missing for a particular show, and I know they were on TMDb, so I asked them to update the database, or whatever they do to keep them in sync. No response. It's really not a bad site. It's got a lot of great features, but I guess they don't have the staff to look after the customers.
