What do you think? …

Oh boy, this is lovely! I got sunburnt in Scotland in a cloudy day, but never again! Awesome :) Ps. I really liked the app, just got it installed and selected my skin type (II), so I'll certainly use it in weekends and such. Is it free always by the way @techno246 ? :-)
Ming Cheuk
@victormanriquey Thanks! :D as a Kiwi, I have been burnt far too many times here in New Zealand! So that's why we decided to do something about. And like you said, clouds can be very deceptive... as well as heat, since you can't actually feel UV (heat is from infrared)
Ming Cheuk
@victormanriquey Gladto hear you like the app! What's free now will always be free! I am also a huge disbeliever in banner ads... So there won't be any ads any time soon either haha
Victor Manrique
@techno246 Ah that's great! :) I'm going on vacation soon, so I'll make sure to check the app beforehands, and in any case, +50 FTW hahaha
Cristi`quad`Glodeanu
@victormanriquey you know that the sunscreen protection increase from SPF 30 to SPF 50 is roughly 1%, right? :)
Victor Manrique
@quad_bx I did not know no, any article where I can read about it? :-)

Hi Product Hunt Community! My name is Ming and I am a co-founder of UVLens. Growing up in New Zealand, we frequently get roasted in the sun (not thanks to our location on the globe and hole in the ozone above us). The beautiful beaches and mountains don't help either! We decided to try solve this problem in 2013 with a wearable UV sensor that tracks your exposure and warns you when you've had enough. After many iterations and pivots, we developed the technology further and figured out a way to provide accurate forecasts of UV levels to anyone in the world, without the need to purchase your own sensor. This is possible with the help of forecasts from satellite data and ground sensors measuring real time UV. UVLens is currently in the process of being integrated with a network of 5000 sensors all over the world, so you can get live UV data local to you (some countries already live). Our mission is to provide people with accurate and practical UV information to safely enjoy the sun! No one should ever have to ever fear the sun :) We'd love to hear your thoughts, feedback or ideas! I am also happy to answer any questions you may have.

Had the idea for this app last year, but couldn't find a nice API for the UV indexes. Which API do you use?
Ming Cheuk
@_alexfi As far as I know, I don't think there are any good publicly available APIs for UV forecasting. I've only found them bundled with other weather data, and they would only give you a single estimate for the entire day, which isn't very helpful. To that end, we decided to build our own, using irradiance, ozone, cloud, and aerosol forecasts. During clear days, the forecasts over the day are usually to 0.1 of a UV index to the measured values. If there is interest, we can open up our APIs the other developers :) We have built it as a REST service.
Alex
@techno246 This would be great. Can you keep me up-to-date?
Ming Cheuk
@_alexfi Of course! Flick me an email at ming.cheuk@spark64.com and I'll let you know when we open it up. Might even be able to get you a private API key in the mean time to experiment with.
Volen Vulkov
wow great product!
Ming Cheuk
@volen_vulkov thanks! :)

WoW..App Hope it will have geolocation of India. :)
Ming Cheuk
@pmmustdie Yes, definitely supports India! If you tried getting the forecast within the last hour, try again. There was a slight glitch for some locations which has been all fixed up now!
JuniorPM
@techno246 Cool. I tried, and got the result :)

@techno246 @pmmustdie It doesn't works for me in Madrid (Spain) but I love the app (I have sun allergy!!)
Ming Cheuk
@oscar_sp We just identified a bug that causes the wrong time to be shown for everyone below a longitude of 0 deg... and looks like Madrid is -3.7 deg. Pushing and update now! Android should be fixed within 12 hours and iOS in 24-48 when the update is approved.
Óscar SP
@techno246 It works! thank you
Vicki Lee
I like this idea, however, when I try to enter my location manually, the keyboard covers the field form and I can't see what I'm typing. Also, the times aren't accurate. I'm only able to see times between 12AM-6AM when I want to use it now at 12PM.
Ming Cheuk
@vickihlee Thanks for reporting the bug! @keyul found that the wrong times are shown when the location is found automatically (as opposed to manually entered). Can you confirm that the times were incorrect when it's set to use user location? Should be fixed within the next few days!
Vicki Lee
@techno246 It works now! I didn't allow the app to access my location and manually typed in my location instead. Thanks! Looking forward to the new update. :)
Ming Cheuk
@vickihlee Found the bug! Pushing and update now! Android should be fixed in 12 hours and iOS in 24-48 hours.
Dion Eade
Nice one guys, UV lens is awesome! Have been using it ever since I met you guys at a meetup. As a near transparent white skinned kiwi, I'm also constantly getting owned by the sun. Would love to help any way I can
Ming Cheuk
@dion_eade Thanks for the continued support Dion! Indeed, New Zealand problems! haha "Oh, it's cloudy today. She'll be 'right. nek minnut...".
