Hey PH’ers!
My name is Avner and I am the founder and CEO of Public. Excited to be here and hear your feedback.
We started Public because we wanted to have a place where we can have and discover great conversations. We are used to listening to people talk on the radio/podcasts or watching them on TV/YouTube, but so many conversations are now taking place over messaging, and yet there is no easy way to share these chats with the world.
The first version of Public runs on iPhone and you can also watch/participate on the web. Would love to hear your feedback about the concept and our execution of it.
I will be here answering comments, but you can also find me on Public at http://public.chat/feedback or you can email me avner@public.chat
Also published a blog post with more details.. https://medium.com/wearepublic/w...
Looking forward to chatting!
Avner
@ishenfeld it should work in Israel, but probably the lack of Android support will be a challenge. UI not localized to hebrew, but I assume that should not be an issue.
I’ve been working with the team for the past few weeks, and we’re really excited to bring Public to the err… public! I’ve started all kinds of chats, from baseball to skincare, bots to Game of Thrones. It’s been a blast so far, and we’re excited to see what the PH community thinks!
I've been checking this out for a couple of days and it looks like an awesome way to follow the topics and get input in public. Great concept that gives a forum-like chatting feel to the product.
Fascinating idea, with a lot of promise. I'm generally bullish on people people more ready for more public sharing. But if I understand this correctly, it's more lopsided than I first imagined; in that the "conversation people" will likely be a small percentage (famous or knowledgable or influential people talking) and then 99% are sort of "lurkers" who are following and reading the conversation, and maybe reacting amongst themselves as a sort of "sideline" group. Yes?
@scottken the challenge is that when there are too many people in a conversation it is impossible to have a conversation... so it's designed for small groups to be talking and unlimited audience. you don't have to be a celebrity or an expert to do a chat, but you should be willing to have that conversation in public...
@avneron Ah OK, so you could still get a 'long tail' of conversations - like a Periscope - but they may not have very many lurkers. So a big challenge seems to be whether enough people are ready/willing to converse publicly, thereby generating enough conversations, such that the average user can find something relevant and interesting. It's actually quite a genius idea to try, so hats off for actually creating something pretty innovative! Are you actively incentivizing high profile people to use this to 'kick start' the user base? One random idea: allow me to monetize my own audience (tips button?) or maybe get 'value' from my listeners in some other way (maybe the ability to answer any questions from lurkers after the conversation, offline? Or the ability to collect opt-in emails from lurkers?) so I am more inclined to push my broadcasts to my followers on social media. I will definitely give it a try, and follow your progress closely. Good luck & congrats!
@scottken we are going to try and grow the community organically, hopefully building niche and active communities. We are thinking about tipping and other ideas of making Public a place that is very creator friendly.
@avneron I know 'niche' and 'organic' is the commonly advised route ("Facebook started at just Harvard!"). But I'm not sold on it for something like this - I'd go pedal to the metal and blow it out, worldwide.
Glad to see it out and in people's hands! I've been playing with Public since inception and I love the premise and the experience. Excited to see how the community engages with it.
