Great looking app but without full API access, it is pretty useless. Would PH be willing to open its API to allow for third-party apps? cc @rrhoover
Ryan Hoover
@rfreling there are a lot of issues with providing write access, one of them regarding maintaining "authenticity" of upvotes. For example, someone might change the context of what an upvote means, skewing the rankings.
Reinald Freling
@rrhoover I understand the issue. There's a balance to strike between opening the API access and benefitting from the community effect and keeping control of the platform to guide its growth (à la Twitter).
Ryan Hoover
Very cool, @imns81! And I agree. It looks way cooler spelled, "lazer".
Nate Smith
@rrhoover thanks for the support

Hi everyone, My name is Nate Smith and I'm the creator of Laser Kitten. The app's design takes some heavy inspiration from the Twitter Mac app and the Product Hunt iPhone app. My motivation to build this app came from me wanting to have a slim Mac app that I could put on my second monitor. I wanted something I could leave up all day so I can keep a casual eye on the days top hunts. Laser Kitten is an open source app built with some really amazing new technologies that weren't even around a short time ago. If you're interested in contributing or learning more about how it was made, please checkout the apps Github page. If you have any questions please ask, I'll be watching the thread all day. Lastly, while I have the chance, I'd like to say thank you to @rrhoover and the Product Hunt team. I've really enjoyed browsing this site over the last year or so and I've found a ton of great tools and apps on here.
Nate Smith
@rrhoover @bentossell I see that you just launched Topics, are you going to be adding an API endpoint for that too? I'd love to add it too Laser Kitten.
Ryan Hoover
@imns81 @bentossell YUP! Tomorrow.
Philip Amour
Out of curiosity - why did you choose to develop this client with web technologies instead of building a native OS X App?
Nate Smith
@philipamour because I wanted to try it out and see how it performed. Overall I'm pretty happy with it, but the build process proved to be a little brutal. Also, in theory it will be cross platform, although currently I've only built it for the Mac.
