Study on YouTube without falling into Shorts

7 followers

YouFocus is a Chrome extension for people who use YouTube to learn and work but keep getting dragged into recommendations and Shorts. Turn on Study or Work mode to hide most distractions, take notes in a panel next to the video, and see how much of your YouTube time is actually useful. All data stays local in your browser.

Hey PH! I built YouFocus because YouTube is both my main “university” and my biggest procrastination machine. My workflow used to be a mess: – open a lecture or coding tutorial – pause every few minutes to write notes in Notion/Docs – save videos as links to my own Telegram Saved Messages (we all do this, right? 😅) – …and then completely lose context a week later At the same time I’d open YouTube “to study”, get distracted by the sidebar, and wake up 2 hours later watching random Shorts. So I hacked together a tool to fix this for myself. YouFocus turns YouTube into a more intentional learning environment: ✅ **Study / Work modes** – one switch to hide recommendations, Shorts and distracting channels ✅ **Contextual notes** – a panel right next to the video; notes are saved with the video, channel and time ✅ **Reality-check stats** – see how much of your YouTube time is actually focused learning vs just doomscrolling One thing I care about deeply: **Everything is stored locally in your browser.** No accounts, no servers, no analytics. I literally can’t see your data even if I wanted to. I’d love honest feedback from the community: 1. Does the “Study Mode for YouTube” idea resonate with you, or is an ad blocker good enough? 2. What feels over-engineered or missing? 3. If this was your project, what would you build next? YouFocus is free to use. Happy to answer any tech questions about the Chrome APIs, tracking time, local-only storage, etc. Thanks for checking it out 🙌

@_skukler_ Love this! YouTube is simultaneously the best learning resource and the worst attention trap for me.

Feel like the notes would actually be pretty useful. Ad-blocker is okay, but doesn't turn off the distracting videos that I want to watch from my favourite youtubers so I'll be using this.

Love that it's free to use.

Congrats on the launch 🚀

@sprint_buddy Thanks a lot!

I’m really curious how the notes will work for you in practice. If you run into anything annoying or feel like “this should work differently”, please ping me – I’m still actively shaping the product around real workflows.

Thanks again for checking it out and for the support 🚀
