Yap makes language learning convenient, consistent, and contextual by providing daily practice sentences. Our sentences, generated by ChatGPT, are designed to be challenging for all levels. Use the Yap widget to get language exposure right on your home screen.
As a lifelong language learner, I know how hard it is to keep up daily routines for language study. I also realized that after reaching an intermediate level, most language learning apps stop being useful.
I created Yap because I wanted to practice with longer, complex sentences so I could learn new words in context. I particularly wanted the home screen widget functionality so I couldn't escape the routine - every time I use my phone, I read a new sentence in my target language.
Hope you find Yap as useful as I do!

@chente Congratulations Vincent for such an incredible launch! Really excited to see what the future holds for your project. Just quick question! Does this support multiple languages?
@keshini_ If you mean learning two languages at once, it currently does not :(. I would love it to, I'll keep it in mind for the future! Currently, since I'm learning Spanish and Chinese, I have my target lang set to Chinese and my base language in Spanish, so I get practice with both.

@chente Yup that would be awesome! Anyway great start and good luck 😉
Congrats on the launch!
I think this is a really efficient way to learn bits and pieces of a new language, day by day 😊
One quick feedback: I think the homescreen widget is not visually appealing enough to deserve a shiny spot in one’s homescreen 😅 I’d put some effort on making the widget look gorgeous, because when it comes to iOS homescreen beauty, people can be very picky >:)
Best of luck with your project!
@rogeroba Thank you that's great feedback! I definitely want to add some customizability to the widget, but now I'll have to think about ways to make it real gorgeous.
@chente that's it! Small details might make the difference in this case 😊 good luck Vincent!

I absolutely love this idea! For sure going to be incorporated into my Portuguese learning journey :)
Small question though: as a German native, working and creating content in lots of different languages, I realize on the daily how basic and, a lot of times weirdly sounding chatgpt can be, especially for languages like German - how are you checking if the sentences are not just AI generated and grammatically correct but actually used by natives.
Secondly, how much customization do users get for their daily sentence?
@lea_plorer I haven't done any quality control measures yet, but I plan to build a "report sentence" functionality soon.
I know that some sentences/translations, especially in rarer languages, come out a bit funky. For really common languages like Spanish and Chinese (which I happen to be learning), I haven't noticed it being a real problem.
If any German sounds weird, please let me know! I have blind spots in many of these languages so I'll be really relying on user feedback.
Also! With GPT 4, the sentences get waaaaay better and more reliable. I'm working on some optimizations before I convert from GPT3.5 to GPT4, but once that comes, the sentences will be 🤌🤌🤌
@lea_plorer As for customization - that's the biggest feature I want to build next (but I need to do a lot of things before that)! Imagine picking a topic you're interested in, or a curated vocab list, or picking the language register (casual with lots of slang? or business formal?). That's the dream :)

It's quite helpful to see a sentence in a foreign language every time I use my phone! Works as a great reminder to stick to my commitment to learn the language and helps remember words in a context.
I love it! This is exactly what I've been looking for for a long time. It's so much easier to learn a language if you look at the usage every time you use your phone 😃
What are your plans for the development of this app 🚀
I’m really enthusiastic about the idea behind the app! I believe that one of the most effective methods for language learning is through context, using real-life examples, and that’s exactly what Yap provides. To make it more attractive to users, it might be beneficial to work on the design a bit. I’m looking forward to seeing the app’s future improvements! :)
@katja_varjacic1 Thank you! And yes about context! One of the large inspirations for this app was the concept of Comprehensible Input - know 95% of the words so you can intuit the other 5% naturally and you'll acquire the language easily :)
Do you also offer it for the Slovenian language? My mother-in-law is trying to learn it, but due to its relatively small number of speakers (around 2 million people), there are very few apps available.
@jernej_dvorsak We don't have Slovenian right now, but I'll be sure to add it in the next update!
I do feel very strongly about supporting less commonly learned languages, which is why I've added quite a few that are relevant to dear friends, like Catalan, Tibetan, Hokkien, etc. I've tried to learn a few and I know that finding resources is so hard. ChatGPT is actually a gold mine for less commonly spoken languages, even if the translations aren't always perfect, so I would love for Yap to be able to be a reliable resource for people learning these languages.
