Thank you! You’re my first review, so I’ve had it framed and I’m currently deciding who gets it in the will.
You’re quite right about the £0. You came to find out how early you could retire, and I greeted you with a giant “£0 a month”, like a bank manager who’s been waiting years for this moment. It was technically accurate, which is the worst kind of accurate. Pension pots generally can’t be touched before 57, so the calculator looked at your early retirement dreams and replied, in enormous letters, “no”.
So I’ve just fixed it. If you stop work before 57, it now leads with what you could have from 57, then tells you calmly about the £0 years, like a doctor who’s been on the course. The ISA and cash savings boxes also now appear right there on the answer page. Before, they were hiding behind a link, which I can now admit is not where most people look for hope. And if you add a small ISA, it no longer implies you’re stuck on that figure until the State Pension. It shows the income rising from 57, when pensions can be taken.
On taking more from your pension before the State Pension and less after: I’d love to get that right. Could you tell me roughly what retirement age you tried, and whether you’d added ISA savings? I promise to use your answer only for this. I couldn’t use it for anything else anyway, because I still can’t see a thing you type, which you rather kindly pointed out is the whole idea.
