During my study I lived together with some friends. With smartphones not yet being widely accepted, yes this dates back some time, it was always a struggle to see who would be home for dinner. Especially when living together with 8 or more people, which is common in Dutch student houses.
Hence WieMee was invented. After some time, the option to split payments was added , because users were asking for it (Dutch people ;-)).
There's also a nice API (http://dev.wiemee.com) and Telegram integration (http://telegram.me/wiemeebot).

What is the difference here with splitwise (https://splitwise.com/) ? - seems to the be the same product.
