Those forgotten travel photos on my phone can finally become a journey I can retrace on a map. Every time I come home from a trip, I bring back hundreds of new photos. At first, I always tell myself, “I’ll organize them when I have time.” But they usually end up sitting in my photo library untouched. Whenever I want to remember where I went on a particular day, I have to scroll endlessly. After enough time passes, I can’t even remember the order in which the photos were taken. That’s why I built a private travel journal app called WhaleWay. WhaleWay uses the original timestamps and location data in your travel photos to arrange them chronologically and turn them into a journey on a map. It’s simple to use: Choose a group of travel photos, and WhaleWay sorts them by capture time and places each stop on the map. Drag the timeline at the bottom, and you can retrace the journey from its very first stop, revisiting each place in the order it happened. If a photo doesn’t contain location data, you can add the place and your own notes later. Beyond individual trips, WhaleWay also brings years of travel together on one global timeline map. Trips that once sat disconnected in your photo library gradually become a personal map of everywhere you’ve been. We deliberately chose not to build a travel social network. There are no followers, likes, or public activity feeds. Travel photos and location histories are deeply personal. Your content stays on your device and in your own private iCloud, syncing only between your iPhone and iPad.
