◆ I want to use VS Code as a note-taking app, but I need to fix a couple of small issues first: pasting images and directory navigation? ◆ Why do notes have to be restricted tomd or a specific format? ◆ I want my note-taking app to paste content as you see it (HTML, images, videos). ◆ I need to preview PSD and MOV files ◆ I don't want to think about formatting at all ◆ I hate syntax, I just want a plain text editor that can paste images ◆ I want to start up instantly (zero lag on launch)

Starting in 2015, I spent most of my time working in VS Code (doing machine and programming assignments). For me, it took roughly a decade for VS Code to gradually replace all my previous editing tools: Eclipse, IDEA, Notepad++, and more. It wasn’t for any fancy reason—just some basic ones, like selection highlighting, full-disk search, and being lightweight.
Then, beginning in 2025, almost all major AI-integrated tools adopted VS Code as their foundation, such as Claude Code, Cursor, Trae… In 2026, Google’s Antigravity joined in. That basically changed the game entirely. Is this a good or bad thing for me?
It’s a good thing. I already use VS Code all the time, so I don’t have to learn a new tool and can get started right away. It was then that I realized: could I also use VS Code to fix my terrible note-taking experience?
For example, the XX document editor I’ve been using has several flaws: no selection highlighting, paid full-text search, paid monospaced fonts, slow pasting of large blocks (it probably does some low-level formatting conversion, which I don’t even want), and it hogs resources (opening it uses several gigabytes of RAM). It works, but it feels mentally taxing.
What I really want is just an ultra-fast plain-text editor that supports pasting images. I hate messy formatting. I just want to capture and jot down my observations and ideas as quickly as possible. Simply put, my goal is: to use VS Code, but be able to paste images directly in it. And my inspirations aren’t just images—I want to paste everything as-is, including web resources, all in one step.
