Now let’s get nerdy 🔬 VisitRecall isn’t a transcription app with a GPT wrapper. Under the hood, we’re building a structured medical intelligence layer. Every visit, we extract medical entities and map them to real clinical standards: 💊 RxNorm-linked medications — every med mapped to official RxNorm codes for precise identification. “The little white pill” becomes Metformin 500mg with its full RxNorm classification. 📋 ICD-10 condition mapping — every problem, diagnosis, and condition linked to standardized ICD-10 codes. This isn’t free-text tagging. It’s structured medical data. 🧪 Lab result analysis — upload lab results and watch the AI break them down. Reference ranges, trends across visits, what’s improving, what needs attention. 📊 Vitals tracking with trends — blood pressure, A1C, cholesterol tracked over time with trend detection (improving, stable, worsening) so you can see the trajectory, not just a snapshot. Why does the structured data matter? Because this is what unlocks cross-visit intelligence. When your cardiologist says your blood pressure is “a little high” and your PCP mentioned it three months ago and your endocrinologist just adjusted a medication that affects it — VisitRecall connects those dots. It knows Metformin was started six months ago. It knows the dosage changed last month. It knows your provider said “let’s recheck in 90 days” and that window is closing. So when you walk into your next appointment, you’re not starting from scratch. You’re walking in with the right questions, informed by everything all of your doctors have said. Cross-visit. Cross-provider. Cross-specialty. And here’s where I think everyone else is getting it wrong. Every company in this space is racing to plug into the EHR. They want the chart data. They want the structured records. And I get it — that data is valuable. But you know what’s in an EHR? Billing codes and documentation written to cover liability. That’s what EHR data was built for — to bill and to CYA. I spent 4.5yrs building an EHR at One Medical. The EHR was never built to capture what actually happened between you and your doctor. You know what does capture that? The conversation. The actual words spoken between a provider and a patient. That’s where the doctor says “I’m a little worried about this.” That’s where you say “I’m scared.” That’s where the real decisions get made — not in a chart note written after you left the room. We’re not connecting to the EHR. We’re listening to the relationship. That’s the difference. While I was building this, I was also processing. I'd just shut down my last company. I was mourning it. I was reading Atul Gawande's "Being Mortal" and Viktor Frankl's "Man's Search for Meaning" — two books about what matters when everything else gets stripped away. Gawande helped me understand that patients need comprehension before they can make real decisions about their care. Frankl helped me understand that I needed to stop mourning what I'd lost and find meaning in what I was building next. VisitRecall became both things at once — the product I was building and the purpose I was looking for. This drove me to build a two-layer question model Layer 1 is comprehension: do you understand what’s happening? “What does this test measure?” “What are the side effects of this medication?” “Why is this referral needed?” Layer 2 is interpretation: does this align with what matters to you? “How will this affect my daily routine?” “What should I be most worried about?” “What are the alternatives if I want to avoid surgery?” The system only surfaces Layer 2 when you’ve demonstrated you understand the basics. Because no one can make values-based decisions about their treatment when they’re still confused about what the treatment even is. Over time, VisitRecall learns what matters to you — your priorities, your concerns, your non-negotiables — and makes sure those get surfaced to every provider, at every visit.
