I’m Andrei, the maker of Vela.

The idea came to me out of nowhere: a spare iPhone could easily work as a baby monitor. Then I looked at what’s already out there. Most apps were either pricey subscriptions or felt old and clunky. So I set out to build one that’s simple, good-looking and free for use at home.

What you get:

Two iPhones, no extra hardware. One stays by the cot, the other is in your hand.
Pair with a code. No account, no sign-up, no email.
Free on home Wi‑Fi, with no session limits. One purchase, not a subscription, unlocks watching from anywhere.
Crying alerts, talk back, a night light and rain sounds on the phone by the cot.
It tells you clearly when the connection drops instead of going quiet.

A few honest limits. iOS doesn’t let apps use the camera in the background, so the phone by the cot keeps Vela open with the screen on. Plug it in for the night. Vela is a convenience, not a medical device.

It also works on iPhone Duo: unfold it and you get a big picture of the room.
