What does the alternative (offline?) process look like and how much time/effort do you save the people using the product? Are your customers individual filers, or patent lawyers/firms?

@pt Going thru CIPO (govt) much more complicated as one has to have knowledge of how to construct a proper application. We leverage our technology and experienced lawyer to bring efficiency and simplicity for any filer. We use a comprehensive trademark search to help craft each application according to best practices. And we price our service much less costly than any law firm, and very competitive to the few other service providers in Canada.

@pt Umark has a sophisticated online free search for Canadian trademarks, requiring no knowledge for anyone to search the Can tm db.

There are several alternatives. Going directly to CIPO (govt), but their online search is not as robust as Umark's without going into advanced mode. Filing a tm with CIPO requires extensive knowledge of how to construct a proper application, which individual filers will not know. Our clientele are not law firms per se, we exist for businesses and individual filers.
@umarkcanada how do you see the risk of filing a bad patent? Most lawyers would advise you to work with a professional so your patent is defensible layer. Is this a product for people without the budget for a good lawyer, or can you help them get the same output without the expensive lawyer?

@pt We don't deal with patents, only trademarks. This is exactly a more efficient, less time consuming and less costly process to apply for a tm.

@pt Essentially, making the decision easy for any startup on a budget to protect their brand/IP at low cost.
How big do u think this market is? & where do u go next?

@marvinliao There are just a handful of other service providers (mostly law firms) and there is room to easily capture 300-400 tm applications per year. It will also be possible to leverage relationships for ancillary IP services.

@umarkcanada How do u see the differences in Canada & rest of world? ie. how do u leverage the knowledge & expertise u are developing to other countries systems.
