An alternative to Google translate (and anyone else) that's fast, accurate, and 1/30th the price. 20+ supported languages, not billed until 100k tokens, and already used thousands of times with real language learning users.
Hey Everyone!
The landing page has a demo for you to test performance yourself for free with no card required. (Also landing page says 1/13 the price because had to account for all 3 big names, with varying prices each).
My goal is to keep fundamental utilities and accessibility tools like translation services in the hands of small creators rather than some mega corporation, so any feedback is very much appreciated to help move in that direction.

🧐 Good find
hey! congrats on releasing this!
what does it use under the hood?
I'm in the process of creating a physical device with a screen that can do live translations and I though with all these LLMs there surely is a faster/better translation solution around the corner. could this be it?
@xucian hey, thanks! Yep, you were dead on. The only issue is that they can be very unpredictable in their responses (a flavor of their infamous hallucinations), so a lot under the hood here is corralling that. Took a lot of trial and error to get it to play nice and predictable. Nice guess lol

@nicben_ thanks for clarification. I imagined most of the work is around sanitization. it'll get more predictable over time, I guess.
do you have any tips for my specific case? could it be fast enough for live translation? I'll take care of the speech-to-text part and such, ofc.
also, I'm looking to start with english->greek and english->romanian.
fun backstory: I'm doing this to help my dad experience red dead redemption 2, he's a huge fan of old western movies, hehe. and, why not, later turn it into a product
@xucian Yep, definitely. It's fast enough for live translation (under .5 second latency), but any faster than that you'd need some on-premises hardware. Though I don't think that's entirely necessary. Cool idea though, I definitely think this would be as good as it gets for that use case.

@nicben_ thanks, any plans to add Romanian & Greek?
@naveed_rehman Hey, good question! This is better because the model is specifically built for this purpose;
ChatGPT can be very unpredictable in its responses (a flavor of their infamous hallucinations), so a lot under the hood here is corralling that. Took a lot of trial and error to get it to play nice and predictable :)
@shinny When I used it over the other big names for my previous startup, I honestly couldn't tell the difference. But I encourage you to use the demo on the landing page (no account or card required) and see for yourself :)
@catcat_fist I haven't, but that's very interesting. What would be the use case there?
Report
@nicben_ For example, translating words by highlighting them while reading articles or in the comment section. In this case, a Chrome extension saves me from having to switch between pages.
@catcat_fist I see. I'd have to figure out how to swing it monetarily, but that sounds interesting. I'll look into it and lyk if I pursue, thanks for the suggestion

It is a wonderful product, our Wordigo product and Google Translate are very expensive, I can examine this service in more detail and integrate it.

@osmandlsmn That's awesome to hear! Please do, and lmk if you've got any questions. I'm constantly improving it too, so I'm open to any and all feedback
