Tracer handles the everyday things that happen on your screen, quickly and cleanly. I wanted a tool that feels as natural as breathing. One shortcut, and what comes up is whatever the moment calls for. The fewest steps, nothing buried under menus, and the result is already in front of you. Most screenshot tools hand you a file and stop there. This one keeps the shot in front of you and keeps it useful. Everything else grew out of that. $3.99, one time. No subscription.
Hi everyone, I am the developer of Tracer and a productivity nerd, the kind who will spend an hour shaving three seconds off something he does every day.
There are already good screenshot apps out there and I went through quite a few of them. But after using one for a while, one or two small things always got in the way, so I moved to another, then another, and ended up a screenshot app nomad. What I wanted was not a killer feature. I wanted an app that handles the ordinary things that come up all day without making me stop and think about it.
What Tracer can do
Capture anything on screen, image or video, and leave it floating right where it is
Drag over any text and translate it on the spot (2 sec)
Cut a product or a person out of its background (3 sec)
Scrolling capture up to 100,000 pixels (10 sec)
Save an image from the web straight into the folder you want (3 sec)
Pull the text out of an image and copy it (3 sec)
Turn a favorite moment into a GIF (10 sec)
Grab any color on screen and copy the exact value (3 sec)
Float every reference you need, then view them one at a time (everything else hides)
Record a product demo, trim it and share it, without another app
Mark up a screenshot, add comments and hand it over with ⌘C and ⌘V (20 sec)
Pin a design over the real screen and work through it (clicks pass to the app below)
Nobody asked, but I spent an embarrassing amount of time on the capture sound and the little animation that goes with it. Not everyone wants that, so each one can be turned off in settings.
One rule I kept while building it
I wanted it to feel as natural as breathing. Nothing grand, just things like these.
Drag out a capture area → it takes the shot and floats it right there
Press ⌘C while dragging the area → that area goes to the clipboard
Press ⌘S while dragging the area → take a guess. It does what you expect
Press ⌘C with no area selected → the previous area goes back to the clipboard. No separate "Previous Area Capture" menu item, no extra step
Press ⌘C on a floating shot → that shot goes to the clipboard
Press ⌘C while dragging in OCR mode → the extracted text goes to the clipboard
Press ⌘C while dragging in translate mode → the translated text goes to the clipboard
The same key does what you would expect in each situation. There is less to memorize.
