In 2021, a song I’d never heard before came on while I was listening to Spotify. I didn’t know it then, but that moment planted the seed for an idea that would eventually lead me to leave my job as a software engineer and build my own app. This is the story. This new song really caught my attention because its sound and rhythm felt different. I looked down at my phone and saw I didn’t even know the artist, but I knew she had the potential to be a superstar. At the time, I was deep into stock market investing, always looking to discover the next big thing before everyone else. What about this emerging artist I had just discovered? If I could invest in her like I would in a company’s stock, I could capitalize on my early discovery. As you can guess, what I imagined didn’t exist. I wrote the thought down in my phone notes and moved on. This idea stayed in my mind (and in my notes) for 3 years - through building Starknet (a leading ZK blockchain) at StarkWare and finishing my MBA. But I kept on wondering about this question: Is it possible to create a music artist stock market? So I thought about it during those years, dug deeper into stocks and the economics of the music industry, and things started falling into place. Here’s what I believe: 1. It is possible. 2. Blockchain is perfect for it, and it is perfect for blockchain. 3. It can solve another burning problem - the unfair royalties artists get from streaming platforms.
