Three Finger Tap to Close Tab is a lightweight, open-source extension that provides a quick and simple way to close the current browser tab. Three-finger tap or middle-click anywhere on a webpage outside links and editable fields to close the current tab. You can also click the extension icon in the toolbar to close the tab. Middle-clicking links and feed cards keeps the browser's normal behavior, so you can continue opening links and posts in new tabs as usual.

You want to close a browser tab, but reaching for the small X in the tab bar feels unnecessarily tedious, especially when you're using a touchpad. Three Finger Tap to Close Tab lets you close the current tab with a simple three-finger tap.
Tap anywhere on a webpage with three fingers to close the current tab. You can also use a middle click, click the extension icon in the toolbar, or press Alt+Shift+W. Middle-clicking links and feed cards still opens them in new tabs as usual. A built-in safety buffer helps prevent accidental closures near links and interactive elements. No popup menus or configuration needed.
I often found myself reaching for the tab's close button, even when I was already using the touchpad. I wanted a more natural way to close tabs without moving the cursor all the way to the top of the screen. A simple three-finger tap felt like the right solution.
That idea shaped how the extension works. It only closes the tab when you perform the gesture or action. It avoids interfering with links, buttons and editable fields, and includes a safety buffer to reduce accidental closures. There are no analytics, no tracking, no network requests and no collection of browsing history. All actions happen locally in your browser. Even a small convenience shouldn't come at the cost of your privacy.
