Terminal Descent is a browser-based cyberpunk text adventure where you hack through a corrupted digital network called The Lattice. You trace the trail of a missing runner, manage a customizable cyberdeck, and face adaptive security systems that escalate based on your actions. Two play modes: Classic (pure terminal) and Modern (live HUD with real-time gauges and skill tracking). Every obstacle can be solved through combat, stealth, hacking, or social interaction.
Hey Product Hunt! I built Terminal Descent because I wanted a game that felt like the hacking sequences in old cyberpunk fiction, where the terminal IS the game, not a minigame inside a game.
It's a text adventure built with React 19 and xterm.js that renders real ANSI output in your browser. The entire game runs client-server over WebSocket with no page loads. Modern mode adds a live cyberdeck HUD with SVG gauges and heat-reactive visuals.
Some things I'm proud of:
- The parser understands natural language input, not just rigid commands
- NPCs track your conversation history and unlock new dialogue based on what you've discovered elsewhere
- The Heat system creates real tension: every aggressive action raises your threat level across 5 tiers
It's early access (Season 1 of 3), free to play, and I'd love feedback from this community. What would you want to see in a modern text adventure?
