Greetings, adventurers! ⚔️
I built TavernLantern because every D&D campaign I've joined starts the same way: someone stares at a blank character sheet for 40 minutes trying to name their half-orc paladin, while the rest of us eat cold pizza.
Most name generators I tried spit out random syllables that sounded nothing like the lore — a "dwarf" name that could pass for a WiFi password, an "elf" name with zero elvish cadence. So I started with the unsexy part: actually modeling naming conventions across 61 fantasy races — Tolkien-descended elves, Forgotten Realms dwarves, Eberron warforged, and a lot of homebrew edge cases in between.
Then came the real problem. A name isn't a character. So I layered AI on top: pick any generated name, and it expands into a full character sheet — backstory hooks your DM can actually use, personality traits that aren't just "brooding," ability scores that match the class, and portrait art so your token looks like something other than a red circle.
The flow evolved a lot. V1 was "one big button." V2 added race/class/gender filters because players kept asking "can I just see female dwarf clerics?" V3 added the AI expansion after watching a friend copy-paste names into ChatGPT manually. V4 (current) is fast, free, and optimized for the 2 minutes before a session starts.
Would love to hear what you'd want next — deeper backstory branching? Party generation? Export to Roll20/Foundry? Drop a comment, I'm reading everything today.
