What's great

built TankSnap because I was the frustrated fish keeper it's meant for. Every aquarium app I'd tried before making my own asked me to manually type in species, test results, and equipment — which meant I only ever used them for about two weeks before giving up. So I built the thing I actually wanted: point your camera at a fish and get an ID plus care info, point it at a test strip and get your water values logged instantly, snap new equipment and it's tracked with a timestamp. No typing, no setup, no guesswork. It's less "an app for aquarium data" and more "a camera that happens to understand aquariums."

What needs improvement

Plenty, and I'm heads-down on it. Data sync between devices is next up on the roadmap — right now your tank data lives on whichever device you logged it from, and I want it to follow you across phone/tablet seamlessly. Test strip brand coverage is still expanding — most major brands are supported but not all of them yet. And species ID, while solid, isn't perfect on rare or juvenile fish where visual identification is genuinely hard even for experienced keepers — I'd rather be upfront about that than oversell it.

vs Alternatives

Before landing on the camera-first approach, I looked at building yet another manual-entry app with a nicer UI — better forms, smarter defaults, quicker taps. But that's the same problem everyone else has already tried to solve, and it still leaves the core friction in place: you have to stop, open the app, and type things in. I also considered a barcode/manual-lookup approach for species ID, but that still requires you to know what you're looking at. The camera-first bet was the harder build (species ID and test strip reading both took real work to get right), but it's the only approach that actually removes the friction instead of just softening it.

What's great

Every other aquarium app I've tried turns into a chore within a week - manual water logs, typing in species names, remembering to update equipment records. TankSnap is the first one that actually matches how I use my tank day to day. I snap a photo of a fish and the app tells me about the health state of my fish. Test strip goes in a photo, values are read automatically instead of me squinting at a color chart and typing numbers in. It's the rare app where the "smart" part actually removes work instead of adding a new UI to learn. The killer feature is the AI Insights report which gives me recommendations how to improve the aquarium based on the size of the tank, number and type of fish and plants and the water parameters logged over time. This is a real game changer!

What needs improvement

The app allows you to export and import data - so your data won't get lost when switching to a new device. An automatic data sync between devices would be a nice feature to have.

vs Alternatives

I'd tried a couple of the bigger aquarium logging apps (spreadsheet-style entry, plus one with manual water parameter graphs) and even used a plain notes app for a while. They all worked fine as data stores, but none of them solved the actual friction: getting the data in. I chose TankSnap because it's the only one that cut out manual entry almost entirely rather than just giving me a nicer form to fill in.
