I discovered this by accident while solo traveling through Portugal and Spain.
Instead of constantly googling buildings or booking local guided tours, I started talking to Gemini through my earbuds while walking through the city.
Here's the part that surprised me: "Gemini Live" can see your live GPS location. It knows exactly where you are, in real time, as you walk. So when you ask "what's that building on my left?" - it already knows which street you're on.
No typing an address. No describing where you are. It just… knows.
You ask. It answers. You keep walking.
Then I took it one step further. I gave Gemini a personality so it would behave like a real travel guide, not a search engine.
Suddenly it didn't feel like using an app anymore.
You're walking through Lisbon. You ask: "What's this building on my left?" "You're looking at the Carmo Convent - destroyed in the 1755 earthquake and deliberately left in ruins as a memorial. Step inside and the roofless Gothic arches still feel like standing inside history."
It felt like walking through a city with a very knowledgeable companion in your ear - one who always knows exactly where you are.
Once you travel like this, it's hard to go back.
So I wrote everything down in one Playbook - exactly what I use, the personas I created, and the prompts that make it feel less like an app and more like a local friend who happens to know every street in the world.

How well does the Gemini Live GPS tracking actually work in practice, like does it drain your battery a ton or lag behind your actual location when you're walking fast?

Used one of the street scripts in Lisbon and it actually called out a tile panel I would have walked right past. The medieval merchant persona made the whole thing feel like a friend pointing things out.

Tried the street script for pointing out church architecture and it actually pulled up a quick story I hadn't heard before. The persona prompts feel like a clever workaround for getting more personality out of Gemini Live.
