Over the two and a half decades I've been in this space, I've watched the e-commerce landscape shift drastically. Today, if you want a fully-featured online store, you are often forced into massive SaaS ecosystems that eat up half your profits through recurring platform fees, transaction cuts, and a mountain of bloated paid plugins just to get basic functionality. I wanted something different: an inexpensive, full-featured e-commerce platform that puts complete control and ownership back into the hands of the merchant. That’s why I built SmithShop. It runs on a lightning-fast, clean stack (Nginx, Debian 13, MariaDB) and comes out of the box with the essential tools you actually need to convert customers—like a seamless single-page checkout and native gateways for Stripe, PayPal, Square, Authorize.Net, UPS, FedEx, and USPS. Self-hosted and no platform fees sounds like a dream honestly. One thing that would make it even better is a built-in inventory sync with marketplaces like Amazon and eBay, so we don't have to manage stock across multiple platforms manually. Would save a ton of headaches for anyone running multichannel stores.
