Today I am launching Simply Fluent - a cross-platform mobile app for language learning through reading
The Why
This project has been many years in the making, and was born from the "problematic" experience of trying to read a book in Dutch, which gave me a lot of challenges and brought to light a lot of repetitive problems:
Looking up translations in Google Translate
Understanding entire sentences when more than one word was unknown
Looking up the same translation over and over because I wasn't memorizing it, only using it for the context
Creating flashcards to help me memorize
Trying a lot of different approaches with or without apps nothing really filled the need, and from that the idea for Simply Fluent was born - to solve these problems for myself
Over the years the project has changed and transformed a lot thanks to valuable feedback from many testers from all over the world, and for me it has become the most enjoyable and relaxed way to learn languages
Now it's easier than ever to get started reading in a new language
The What
Users can import their own books, or read from the built-in content library, and while reading it's easy to look up translations and more in-depth information, with the translation that fits best in the context of the current sentence highlighted to avoid the guesswork
The reading becomes a way to discover missing vocabulary, and after translating, translations can be saved to a personal learning dictionary to never have to look up the same translation twice. Any saved translation will appear above the translated text on any page in any book, making it easier to stay present with the reading, while being exposed to the translations over and over in a non-disruptive way
Translations can be marked as favorites so users can focus on learning the vocabulary most valuable to them first, and every translation saved to the dictionary can be memorized using flashcards to make the learning process even quicker—where favorites and the most frequently encountered vocabulary is prioritized
When having memorized a translation it can be marked as such which will remove it from the flashcards and hide it while reading (but still there for easy access if needed)
The Joy
This way the reading becomes easy and streamlined. Reading comprehension goes up, reading speed goes up—vocabulary building, understanding of grammar and sentence structures gets absorbed more easily, and it becomes language learning that feels like entertainment
When reading a book that I want to read there's no need for gamification and streaks to keep me hooked, only the rewarding feeling of making progress, of reading faster, of understanding better

This is truely awesome! I've tried so many language learning apps, and the built-in dictionary feature that learns *with* you is such a game changer. No more endless back-and-forth with Google Translate – you actually absorb the words as you read. So smart! Is there a free trial I can check out before committing?
