Shinkansen Fuji Seat Finder

Shinkansen Fuji Seat Finder

Stop staring at walls. Get the Mt. Fuji seat.

In Japan, locals know that if you want to see Mt. Fuji from the Shinkansen, you should book seat E. Many foreign travelers don’t, and end up on the ocean side, staring at nothing. Instead of another complex timetable app, I built the simplest possible tool that answers just one question: “Which seat should I book for a Mt. Fuji view?” I hacked it together over a weekend using AI. If you have friends coming to Japan, please share it with them so they don’t miss Fuji. 🚄🗻

Hey PH 👋

I'm Tsubasa, an indie maker from Japan.

In Japan, locals know that if you want a Mt. Fuji view from the Shinkansen, you should book seat E. Many of my foreign friends didn’t know this and ended up on the ocean side, staring at nothing. So I built a tiny tool that answers just one question: “Which seat should I book for a Mt. Fuji view?”

I hacked this together over a weekend using AI. Right now it helps you:

- pick the right side and seat type for a Fuji view

- avoid rows with blocked or tiny windows

- quickly check from your phone while booking tickets

If enough people find this useful, I’d love to add a small paid community feature: a members-only board where travelers can share real-time Fuji view reports and seat tips.

I’d love your feedback on:

- Is the UI clear enough for first-time visitors to Japan?

- What other lines or routes should I support next?

- Would a real-time community board be useful for you or your audience?

If you have friends planning a Japan trip, I’d be happy if you share this with them so they don’t miss Fuji. 🚄🗻

Thanks for checking it out!

Amazing. I missed the view of Mount Fuji the last time I traveled there because of the fog. Would love to give this a try!

Totally understand — Mt. Fuji can disappear on foggy days even from the perfect seat.
I hope your next trip gives you a clear view!

Thanks so much, and I’d be happy if you try the tool next time you’re in Japan.

Great app! I think you should also include more informations in the app on how to book the seats etc. This information will also help foreigners to not mess up in the first place

Thank you so much for this feedback – comments like yours are super helpful for me, especially to make the app easier to use for people visiting Japan for the first time.

You’re totally right: just showing “Seat E” is not enough for someone who isn’t used to booking Shinkansen seats.

I’d like to keep the app itself very simple, and instead make this guide much richer with “how to book / how not to mess it up” information:

Thanks again for taking the time to write this, it really helps me decide what to improve next 🙏

@tsubasa_indie Huge congrats on the launch! 🇯🇵 So happy to see another Maker from Japan shipping to the world. The product looks amazing! Supported!

Thank you so much! 🇯🇵
I’ve been learning a lot about AI, but I could hardly code until recently — I put this together in about two days, so I was honestly scared to launch it.
Hearing this from a fellow maker in Japan really means a lot. Let’s keep shipping from Japan to the world!
ありがとうございます!

Felix

would have needed that in Japan this year

Appreciate it! 🙌
Next time you come to Japan I hope this can help you grab the right seat — I’m planning to keep improving it and adding more tips by then.

Quick update from the maker here 👋
I just pushed a small UX / copy refresh to fujiseat.com and the Mt. Fuji guide page to make the seat info clearer, especially for first-time visitors.
This is actually the first time I’ve ever shipped a web app – I don’t really know how to code, I just leaned heavily on AI to build and iterate this over a weekend – so seeing this many people check it out is both surprising and super encouraging.
I have a full-time job, so I probably can’t ship big new features during the launch, but I’m reading every comment and bit of feedback whenever I get a break.
Thank you so much for trying it out and supporting this tiny project! 🙏

This is such a clever niche tool. I've definitely ended up on the wrong side staring at walls on trains before. Does it account for weather conditions? Mt. Fuji can be hidden by clouds pretty often from what I've heard.

Thank you so much for the suggestion — it was really helpful!

I just shipped an update: the app now checks the actual cloud cover near Shin-Fuji using Open-Meteo and shows a simple visibility indicator (High / Medium / Low) right at the top of the screen. It also appears inside the seat result section so travelers know what to expect today.

I’m still new to coding (I built this entirely with AI assistance), but feedback like yours helps me improve fast. Really appreciate you taking the time to point this out!
