What do you think? …

Vansh Jain
I've always been fascinated by the self-driving, though many people talk about how the solutions feel distant. What would you say are the downsides of working in the industry?
Michael R. Bock
@vansh_jain1 Good question! The benefits are manifest, IMO: hard technical challenges, the promise of large societal change, etc. As to the downsides: we are still _very_ early in this industry. Very few, if any, companies have a commercial product. So if you're motivated by having people in the real world use what you make, this might not be the time to work in self driving. One other aspect is that because of the safety-critical nature of autonomous vehicles, there are a lot of (important!) safeguards to making changes to code. So unlike building a web or mobile app, you can't just push code to production multiple times a day. That all being said, I still think it's one of the most exciting industries to work in!

Hey Product Hunters! Michael here šŸ‘‹ 5 years ago I started my career as a Software Engineer working on typical backend, full-stack, and mobile apps, but what I really wanted to work on was self-driving cars. Autonomous vehicles is, IMHO, the coolest industry to work in: it's the perfect combination of the toughest technical challenges _and_ the potential to bring about large societal change (save lives, increase access to mobility). For the past few years I've been keeping a list of every. single. company. working on autonomous vehicle (and related tech), and now I'm finally sharing it with the world! My hope is that it encourages folks looking to break into this industry to take a certain path. Instead of taking online robotics courses or building mini RC car projects, I want to encourage folks to apply to SDC companies! Most of these (150+) companies are hiring. Once you land a job at one (even if you're not working on hardcore AI or robotics on day one), it'll be easier to move laterally or switch companies. šŸ’Ŗ Am I missing any companies or is any data out-of-date? Fill out the forms on the site and please let me know!

Awesome, @michaelrbock! This is a super helpful tool for getting a better view on what the AV industry current looks like. Definitely bookmarking.

This is great! Thanks for openly sharing your list. It'd be neat to see this data over time: was there a particular year of explosion of founding self-driving companies?

More then I thought, great site!
