The day I heard about people getting sick and even dying from smoking cannabis, I was like, "HA! YEAH, RIGHT!". Then a few days passed, and I started seeing big-name media outlets reporting on the issue, calling it the "Vape Crisis." Turns out, counterfeit black-market cannabis vapes containing Vitamin E acetate, a solvent used to "cut" cannabis for use in vape pens, may be responsible for the outbreak. Cannabis testing facilities also found myclobutanil, a fungicide that can transform into hydrogen cyanide when burned. Immediately after reading this, I started looking for a solution.
A few weeks of research, and I discovered that where cannabis is legal, the state government uses a track-and-trace system to keep tabs on licensed businesses to make sure they're selling safe products. This means that every item sold inside a dispensary must have every detail about it entered into the state's track-and-trace system and must display a Unique Identification Number somewhere on its label. I'm thinking to myself: "Well, thanks for telling us!".. If more people knew about this track-and-trace system and how to verify their products, some would still be alive and well.
Six months and about a million certifications later, I developed ScannaRx.
A simple cannabis app to protect consumers and licensed businesses from unregulated THC products by verifying if a product complies with state regulations.
