Hi Product Hunters! I made this map after discovering the pelagic sargassum issue in the Caribbean Sea, on the coasts of which I had just planned a 2 weeks trip. I needed to know more about the impacted beaches and eventually highlight a seasonal phenomenon.
Sargassum seaweed invasions are a big problem for multiple countries right now. Those brown seaweeds have been stranded massively on the Caribbean coasts since 2011, they trap sea turtles and stink the air with a harmful gas as it decays. This phenomenon has significant ecological and economical consequences.
sargassum.watch works like Waze for beaches, when on one you can report the level of seaweeds you see at your position, and join a picture. It requires no identification, just a position. The more we'll be, the more accurate It'll be 😊
The map has been released with curated data but its purpose is to be adopted by you, so it becomes a reference for travelers and any person or organization attempting to address the issue.
This project is open source and you're welcome to help in any way!
