In 2011, I started a job packing microwave popcorn boxes at a startup brand in Boston while waiting to hear back from graduate schools. While graduate schools never materialized, a surprising career in CPG did. From the get-go, existing tech for CPG was expensive and/or irrelevant for emerging brands. We reinvented the wheel with everything, from margin calculators to sales plans to inventory management. Basically built a whole ERP in Excel. Coincidentally, the rise of Shopify, the proliferation of contract manufacturing, and lots of venture money have fueled a boom in the number of CPG startups. But the industry is still complex as hell to navigate for an outsider getting started. While we may not make up the majority of revenue in the CPG industry, we do make up the VAST majority of companies. It's time for the next phase, it's time to make CPG simple.
